Austria - Beauty and Grace

Because of its impressive architecture, musical traditions, and winter sports in the Swiss Alps, Austria has become a popular vacation destination for people from around the globe. With so many things to see and do, you can be sure there is some type of adventure for everyone. The people of Austria literally live to the beat of music, as you will discover from the numerous music festivals that fill the streets with talent. That coupled with outdoor activities and many historical sites, and you can see why this is such as great destination choice.

In the beginning, the land that would one-day become Austria was invaded by numerous armies and tribes, using the Danube Valley as a means of coming and going. For instance, some of those who came to Austria during this time included Avars, Celts, Romans, Slavs, Vandals, and Visgoths. Then in the early part of the 13th century, the Habsburgs took control and set up a very powerful dynasty that ruled Austria all the way up to World War I.

Swayed by gentle guidance, Austria’s territory was extended. Over the years, there were bouts of turmoil and leadership change but then in 1740, Maria Theresia took the throne where she ruled for 40 years. During her reign, wonderful things happened – a public education system was established, economic and army reform was completed, a civil service was founded, and more. However, in 1805, Napoleon defeated Austria, leaving her under the control of Germany. Sadly, more upheaval broke out until 1867 when Emperor Franz Josef formed a dual monarchy, again unifying the empire.

Then with the start of World War II, Austria again struggled but the country worked hard with sheer determination to establish a treaty with the European Union and in 1972, succeeded. Endorsing the country’s connection with the EU in 1994 and formally joining it in 1995, the Austria people are today enjoying many of the benefits. Although Austria has long been a favorite destination, over the years the level of tourism has multiplied.

The architecture of Austria is one of the many aspects that make it so appealing. For instance, as you visit the churches, you will see a wonderful blend of style and art that includes Baroque, Gothic, and Renaissance. In addition, the furniture from Austria is beautiful, known as Biedermeier. However, the art is probably the most amazing and influential, often seen as Art Nouveau and Viennese expression with bold, abstract designs.

The food in Austria is generally referred to as “hearty and stodgy”, a real man’s type meal. Of all concoctions, Wiener Schnitzel is the most common. In fact, this dish has become such a favorite that it is now served around the world. Another favorite is Strudel, baked dough filled with different kinds of fruits and then sprinkled with cinnamon, sugar, and raisins, or all. However, there are other dishes on the menu that you might question such as Beuschel, which are thin slices of calf’s heart or lung. Although it might sound disgusting, it is actually very tasty.

As mentioned, Austria has a long history associated with music. In fact, throughout Europe many famous composers came during the 18th and 19th centuries. During this time, the type of music was quite varied. In Vienna alone, composers such as Schubert, Strausses, Mozart, Brahms, Beethoven, and others played. Because of that, you will find numerous institutions such as the State Opera, called Staatsoper, the Vienna Philharmonic, and of course, the Vienna Boy’s Choir.

The country itself is shaped like a pipe that stretches out 347 miles from the east to the west and then another 173 miles from the north to the south. Austria is also surrounded by other countries to include the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Slovenia, Switzerland, and Slovakia. To the south and west are the beautiful Swiss Alps where you will find the massive Grossglockner’s peak, reaching upwards 12,455 feet above sea level. Then to the north, you have upland forests and to the east, fertile lowlands of the Danube Valley.

Although there are varied environments, approximately 50% of Austria is forest, home to beech and oak trees at lower elevations and conifers at the upper elevations. Then when you reach 6,560 feet, you will find magnificent Alpine meadows with colorful orchids, poppies, and edelweiss blooming from the months of June to September. In the higher Alpine regions, wildlife includes the mountain goat, known as Ibex, the horned antelope, and marmots along with beautiful butterflies and numerous bird species.

Throughout Austria are many great places to include Vienna where there are world-class museums and concert halls, Salzburg with its incredible plazas, courtyards, and churches, and St. Anton, a region that offers some of the finest skiing in all of Austria. However, you should also consider taking a trip to the Eisriesenwelt Caves and Grossglockner Road. The Caves are unbelievable, being the largest accessible ice caves in the world. With 25 miles of explored passageways, you can enjoy a 75-minute tour that is well worth seeing. Then for a great mountain tour, you can enjoy the 30 miles drive on the Grossglockner Road, providing you with the most spectacular views ever.

Other possible destinations while in Austria include Mauthausen, which is a charming town where at one time, prisoners were forced into slave labor, working the granite quarry and Gurk, a town featuring a 12th century cathedral constructed from Romanesque architecture. Within the confines of this church, you will be amazed at the 82 angels’ heads located on the altar and the 72 statues. Finally, the town of Rust is a quaint town known primarily for the stork that go there to build nests on the rooftops.

Again, Austria is a country of life and energy. Throughout the year, numerous festivals occur starting with the New Year concerts and luxurious balls held in Vienna. Then in February, there is the Shrovetide Carnival that celebrates the return of spring and the Vienna International Festival that takes place from the middle of May to the middle of June, featuring art programs, dances, music, parades, and more. A visit to Austria will leave you with wonderful memories of a fine country and fine people.
