Crooked Island

Both Crooked Island and Andros Island in the Bahamas are unique. First, we will talk about Crooked Island, learning why this particular island is worth visiting. Four separate islands form an atoll, which follows the magnificent waters of the Bight of Acklins. Two of these are the Acklins Island and another, Crooked Island. Interestingly, these two islands are bordered by Long Cay and Castle Island, which are virtually uninhabited. In fact, these two islands today, are much as they were when the Bahamas was first discovered.

For years, Christopher Columbus sailed a side of the islands, going through what is called Crooked Island Passage, a very narrow leeway in shallow waters. This route was very important for steam ships heading to Central and South America from Europe. However, this leeway was also used by many buccaneers and pirates that would attack the ships as they came through, taking advantage of the shallow waters.

Crooked Island, Bahamas
Until 1783, both Crooked Island and Acklins Islands were obscured until the American Loyalist started to create settlements around the start of the 9th century. Many of these people were former plantation owners who brought with them money and slaves to start cotton fields. However, cotton soon became an uneconomical choice due to poor soil. At that time, the people turned to diving for sponges, which became a steady form of income until the sponges were destroyed by fungus. With that, the people of Crooked Island turned their work toward farming and fishing. The island itself is beautiful, a definite oasis worth experiencing.
