Cities of Netherlands

Because of the unique blend of old and new found in the Netherlands, the cities are very charming and a real joy to visit. Take the capital city of Amsterdam for example. With less than one million people calling this city home, you have all the convenience of the big city without losing the small town feel.

You can visit a number of beautiful rivers, dine out where several types of ethnic foods are offered, shop in some amazing boutiques and shops, and simply enjoy the simple yet exciting life. Another area to visit while in the Netherlands is The Randstad. The name actually translates to Urban Agglomeration where you will find a densely populated area that actually encircles Amsterdam.

Bridge Netherlands This particular area encompasses Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht, and a number of smaller towns to include Delft, Leiden, and Haarlem. Although there are several things to see while in The Randstad, the fields of beautiful bulb flowers is truly remarkable. Each spring from March to May, the fields are covered with magnificent color while the air has a subtle but sweet fragrance. However, the Erasmus Bridge in Rotterdam is an incredible site, as seen in the photograph.

Then to the south of Haarlem, you will find the world’s largest garden, Keukenhof Gardens. In fact, this garden is so massive and so impressive that more than 800,000 people come each year from around the world to enjoy the eight weeks of bloom and the more than seven million flowers. For as far as you can see, millions of tulips and daffodils come into bloom there every year. Then, you can visit The Hague, the seat government for the Netherlands or enjoy the interesting architecture of Rotterdam.

Park Netherlands Next, there is Hoge Veluwe where the country’s largest national park is located. The park is so large that it covers a full 5,500 hectares, featuring woods, forests, heath moors, and sand. With this type of isolation, an abundance of wildlife live, some that include the wild boar, red deer, and mouflon, which is a type of sheep found in the Mediterranean. In addition, the Kroller-Muller Museum is also found in Hoge Veluwe, and well worth the visit. Within the museum is close to 280 works by the famous artist, Van Gogh along with collections of Mondriaan and Picasso.

Finally, Maastricht is the oldest city in the Netherlands, situated on the bottom of a small strip of land that juts out between Germany and Belgium. This city is historical, dating back to around 50 BC, a time when the Romans camped along the River Meuse. Interestingly, you will still find fortification walls in some areas around the city that at one time, provided protection against attacks. Then on the western outskirts are a number of tunnels that can be explored. With so many cities, towns, villages, and regions, you can spend weeks and never run out of things to do and see.
