A Trip to Belgium

Many people forget about the country of Belgium when traveling to Europe. The people here are very hospitable but unassuming and definitely not boastful. Because of this, Belgium is often thought to be a sleepy country without much to offer. In truth, this country has some of the most mouth-watering cuisine, beautiful artwork, incredible architecture, even more so than many of the larger countries nearby such as France, Germany, and England, and very close family ties.

Belgium was taken over by German tribes in the 7th century, which maintained control through the Frankish Empire in 1100. Until the 14th century, the country was very successful and enjoyed prosperity under the leadership of French Duke of Burgundy. Towns were flourishing and life was good. However, by the middle part of the 15th century, things began to change.

Castle in Belgium At this time, the Low Countries, which consisted of today’s Belgium along with Luxembourg and the Netherlands, were inherited by Spain. With this, a long and fierce battle broke out against the power of the Catholic Spanish. Unfortunately, thousands of people were imprisoned and even executed until 1568 when an even more horrific war broke out. This Revolt of the Netherlands would rage on for the next 80 years, all the time Belgium and Luxembourg, staying under the reign of the Spanish.

Then in 1814, Napoleon was victorious in the Battle of Waterloo, which was the start of the United Kingdom of Netherlands, pulling in Belgium and Luxembourg. Even so, the Catholic people of Belgium fought back and in 1830, were successful in winning their independence. Now, Belgium was in the middle of Germany and France where it would maintain its neutral position throughout the rest of the century. Even so, 1914 was a year when the Germans invaded the country and then again in 1940 when the entire country of Belgium would be conquered in less than a month.

Over the years, Belgium survived and even went through a significant economic boom. Today, you will find a modern day country dotted with skyscrapers, outstanding restaurants, and wonderful shops coupled with an incredible army of diplomats. Interestingly, much of Belgium seems unconcerned with the changes and in fact, many people still live their lives from the past.

The country of Belgium features a number of magnificent castles, beautiful plant and wildlife, and if you enjoy beer and chocolate, the best in the world. Depending on the region within the country you visit, you will find many different languages spoken, as well as various architectural forms. For example, Brussels is well known for its Art Nouveau style where interior designs have straight, clean lines with things like wrought iron and stain glass windows to add “punch.”

The food of Belgium is magnificent and believed by many to be the best in all of Europe. The flavors are the perfect blend between French and German food with seafood and meat being the primary ingredients. If you head to Brussels, you will find it to be both historical and very luxurious. Clearly, this is an artistry city of grace and diversity, which can be seen everywhere. As you walk along the cobblestone alleys, you will discover spectacular places such as the Gothic town hall, charming street cafes, and the Grand Place with baroque guildhalls.

Another popular destination while in Belgium is the city of Antwerp. Incredibly historic, this is a place where the old and new come together and co-exist. Art Nouveau mansions are nestled near Neo-Renaissance villas that sit alongside medieval castles. Bruges is yet another fine city that is actually the most visited. This 13th century city looks as though it has been frozen in time. The art collection is simply compelling and the architecture something to behold.

Then, you have the Ardennes, which is located in the southeast region of the country. Unfortunately, many tourists overlook this city, which is a real shame. Featuring a number of quaint and peaceful villages that are nestled among the Ourthe, Lesse, and Meuse valleys, you can enjoy a number of guided tours that will teach you about the history of this old art town.

If you want a great place to visit while in Belgium, consider the Museum voor Schone Kunsten. There, you could easily spend two to three hours walking around looking at the mesmerizing sculptures, drawings, and paintings of the 14th century. This museum has housed some of the world’s greatest collections since 1810 and offers a romantic temple of art first building during the 1884 to 1890 period.

If you plan to travel to Belgium to enjoy some of the festivals and events, these too are magnificent with most running from the months of July through August. For instance, the Ommegang Pageant is held in July, which is a large parade featuring nobles dressed in historic costumes. Then the National Day is a colorful festival that is representative of the month-long Brussels Fair. You will also find that the people of Belgium are huge jazz enthusiasts. Therefore, jazz festivals take place throughout the year, along with film festivals, classical music extravaganzas, and religious processions.

Belgium is truly a wonderful destination and with such a rich history and diversity, there is something to do and see for every one. Whether interested in taking a tour, go sightseeing, dine at a fabulous restaurant, or become caught up in one of the celebrations, you will leave with a new appreciation for this almost forgotten country.
