Most people have heard of the Battle of Waterloo between France and its alliance of England and the Netherlands when Napoleon Bonaparte had his last battle on June 18, 1815 but what they do not know is what the city of Waterloo has to offer visitors. With a current population close to 30,000, this great city offers tremendous history and diverse attractions.

Wellington Museum, Waterloo The Wellington Museum is a great place to visit. There, the Duke of Wellington set up headquarters in 1815, which are now the museum. On display are documents, uniforms, maps, and other artifacts that recount all of the phases of this historic battle.

If you are a history buff and love outdoor activities, then you might take a trip to Lion Hill. From that vantage point, you can stand on the very territory of Waterloo, overlooking the fields where the Battle of Waterloo took place. This battle consisted of 191,300 men fighting against the British, Prussian, Dutch, and Belgian armies before other powers could come to their aid. Sadly, 48,500 men were either seriously injured or killed.

Waterloo parade Today, you can walk the 226 steps to the top of Lion Hill, which was built to commemorate the Prince of Orange, one of the wounded during the battle. The hill and steps were built during 1824, which two years to complete. Once at the top, you will discover a lion statue weighing 28 tons that proudly overlooks the battlefield. The Battle of Waterloo will forever be one of the most remembered battles of all times and when in Belgium, visiting the historical sites associated with this battle is a true learning experience.
