Australia's Festivals

Some people who choose Australia as their travel destination are looking for some of the world’s best fishing spots, some want to experience the outback, some are into the historical aspect, and then, some people appreciate the culture that is expressed in festivals. The festivals in Australia are so elaborate and magnificent that they attract people from around the world interested in learning more about the culture.

The largest and greatest of all festivals is the Festival of Sydney, attracting 1.5 million people. Interestingly, this particular festival occurs throughout the entire month of January (summer time), consisting of open-air concerts, fireworks, street theater, and more, all to celebrate this fine state. In addition to the outdoor presentations, there are plenty of events held indoors as well.

When attending the Festival of Sydney, you cannot help but feel the energy. So well organized is the concert that it features some of the finest international and national visual and performing arts performers known. If you want to get a feel for the true flavor and spirit of Sydney, Australia, you certainly want to add the Festival of Sydney to your itinerary.

Other festivals include the Adelaide Arts Festival, which occurs during the first part of March but only in even-numbered years. The Womadelaide Festival, held outdoors is a wonderful time of music and dance that occurs the second week or March, and the Comedy Festival with street entertainers held in April. Then, there is the Writer’s Festival that takes place in September, the Stompen Ground Festival that occurs in October, and the Barunga Wugularr Sports and Cultural Festival in June.

Another large festival is the Melbourne International Festival. Held every October, this festival was first staged in 1986. Considered one of the leading international arts festivals in all of Australia, you will enjoy amazing performances and events in the areas of theater, music, dance, multimedia, and visual arts. Best of all, the outdoor events are all free, stretching out over a 17-day period.

If you love boat races, but only ones with boats made of beer cans, then the Darwin’s Beer Can Regatta in August is a great time for the entire family. There is also a boat race on a dry riverboat called the Henley-on-Todd. Finally, if true sports are more to your liking, there is the Australian Grand Prix, the Australian Rules Football, and the famous tennis champion, Australian Open.

As you can see, there are many festivals taking place throughout the year in Australia, offering something fun to do for people of all ages. Just because Australia is the smallest of the seven continents does not mean they do not know how to celebrate big. You can see that in addition to everything else Australia has to offer, this is just one more example of why people love visiting.
