UAE - Visiting Backwater Cities

While in United Arab Emirates, the two main cities most people visit include Abu Dhabi and Dubai. However, you will also discover a number of backwater cities each unique and interesting. For starters, there is the city of Al-Ain, which is in the Buraimi Oasis. This particular city sits in between Oman and Abu Dhabi and on the Omani side is its sister city of Buraimi. The nice thing about visiting Al-Ain is that you can move freely between this city and Buraimi to experience the culture and flavors of Oman without having to have a special Visa.

The oasis is the most inhabited area, with settlements dating back to the 4th millennium. However, more recently, Al-Ain is where Shaikh Zayed, the current ruler was born. Interestingly, the sister city of Buraimi is a provincial town that is laid back and not nearly as lavish as Al-Ain. Because of this, you literally see two connected worlds that are completely different. Keep in mind when visiting Al-Ain, the summers are dry and hot. Therefore, you want to dress comfortably.

Market in Emirates Two places to visit while in Al-Ain include the Eastern Fort and the Al-Ain Museum. Both are in the same southeast compound and great places to see. The museum has a number of pre-oil days on display to include weapons, musical instruments, Bedouin jewelry, and more. For shopping, you want to take time to see the Buraimi Souk, which consists of rows of fresh fruits and vegetables. In the morning, you can also see the camel market and although expect to experience the aroma of animal it is truly an interesting place.

Another city is called Sharjah, which of the seven emirates this is the third largest. Unfortunately, this particular city is often overlooked but the fact is that Sharjah has some of the most impressive architecture in the entire country. You will even find the largest mosque in the United Arab Emirate. In addition, Sharjah is home to a small amusement park, an archaeological museum, watchtowers, numerous Souks, a natural history museum, and many other things that provide a glimpse into the earlier life.

If you want to shop, we highly recommend a trip to Sharjah where you can purchase beautiful Persian rugs and carpets. Although a poor city when compared to Dubai, this city has moved ahead in development, making it a great tourist destination. After shopping and sightseeing, you can enjoy a number of restaurants with wonderful food or just enjoy the many areas that offer a magnificent view. Just remember, these are just two backwater cities so while in the United Arab Emirates, you have a number of excellent opportunities.
