Ukraine's Independence Day

Ukraine is a country that loves celebrations, especially when it comes to independence, which was a long time coming. During Ukraine’s Independence Day, the entire country transforms into a festival. For example, parents stay home from work, children stay home from school, and all around the various cities and villages are massive activities. Best of all, Ukraine’s Independence Day is a time when people can go to the free markets, buying whatever they like, whether food, spices, flowers, electronics, a car, and so on.

In the heart of the city of Kharkiv, there is a wonderful circus where children can go with their family to enjoy all the animals, shows, and then at night, magical fireworks. From there, the younger generation will continue the celebration at private parties. Regardless of how the people choose to celebrate, this is by far the most exciting and happiest event in all of Ukraine. Considering that millions of Ukrainians were prisoned and killed while Joseph Stalin ruled Soviet Union, independence is coveted, a sweet treasure worth celebrating.

Flag of Ukraine In 2005, Ukraine enjoyed its fourteenth year of this particular celebration, held every August. The celebration begins each year with a wonderful, military parade where tens of thousands of locals gather in the square, which has been decorated with colorful flags. As you join the celebration, you will hear people shouting out Ukraine leader' names as they step onto the stage. The focus of the celebration is to stress the freedom that Ukraine has enjoyed after so many devastating years.

In addition to Ukraine’s Independence Day, the country offers visitors and locals a number of exciting events, as well as things to do and see. For example, there is the Orthodox Christmas Day, held in January, Paskha, which is equivalent to westerner’s Easter celebration, then for the month of May, the National Virtuoso where you can enjoy all types of music and theatrical performances. Even with all these wonderful celebrations, the one that the Ukraine people cherish is the one that honors their independence, so well deserved.
