Kinnekulle Mountain

Sweden has a number of beautiful mountains, offering quiet getaways, hiking, mountain climbing, camping, and more. One that you might visit is called the Kinnekulle Mountain, which is actually a plateau. From the top of the mountain, you can enjoy some of the most spectacular views. Then as you walk through the area, you will enjoy a wide range of flora, sometimes coming across the coveted Lady’s Slipper orchid.

Located in the province of Westrogothia, this mountain is often referred to as the “flowering mountain” because no other place in the country has so many biotypes in such a small area. For this reason, people will come from near and far to enjoy the forest meadows, copses, limestone flats, and beautiful pastures. In addition, as you walk through the area of Kinnekulle Mountain, you will be serenaded by many species of birds or notice a number of wildlife meandering around to include moose, deer, and roe.

Kinnekulle Mountain Other wonderful aspects of Kinnekulle Mountain are the five rock types that are seen as layers on top of primeval rock. With this, geologists have been able to determine that the earth is somewhere around 540 million years old. In fact, many fossils have been discovered, believed to be the first primitive animals that came up on the rocks to escape the sea. Then, many stone walls, storage buildings, and barns grace the area that was actually constructed right into the cloven limestone. While the 11th century was a time of stone industry, today the only place that remains are Rabacks, Stoneworks, and Mekaniska.

The Kinnekulle Mountain also features a unique trail that is popular for exploring the mountain and all the beauty is has to offer. You will have a choice of backpacking in the entire length of the trail or simply walking portions of it. Regardless, the nature trail provides you with a remarkable opportunity to see things in the mountain up close and if you like, you can purchase a map at any tourist office to help guide you on this and other trails.

The meadows of Kinnekulle Mountain were all owned by the Vadstena Monastery until the 15th century. The name, Munkangarna is where you will discover many trees native to Sweden, wildflowers, and the spring flowers that are colorful and fragrant. However, Kinnekulle Mountain offers more in the way of waterfalls called Martorpsfallet. These natural falls are truly magnificent during the wet season but in dry periods, they will completely disappear. Another great adventure to enjoy is the Lasse I Berget, a sandstone cave that can be found just to the west of Husaby.

Whether hiking into the Kinnekulle Mountain to see all that nature has on display or fishing in the quarry stocked with game fish, you will fall in love with this one of a kind mountain. You can also visit Hellekis Manor, a manor park with the country’s largest perennial bed or dine on traditional Swedish food at Hogkullen Restaurant with its magnificent view. Regardless, you will be glad you made the choice to spend some time in Kinnekulle Mountain, without doubt one of Sweden’s finest natural experiences.
