Lake Baikal

Moving from the Russian Siberian taiga to the south toward Mongolia, the ground rises and the territory becomes varied. This natural divide is a place with mountains and rugged hills that create ripples between the expansive forests to the north and the beautiful, green grasslands to the south. About halfway down this border in a massive bowl that runs about 400 miles long and 50 miles wide is Lake Baikal, the location of one-quarter of the world’s fresh water supply.

Of all the lakes in Eurasia, Lake Baikal is the largest and also known as the deepest in the world. Considered an amazing natural wonder, the lake is so large that all the earth’s rivers combined would take a year to fill it. Even more incredible is that Lake Baikal is located in a region that is simply breathtaking, boasting forested shorelines, snow-peaked mountains, and some of the most beautiful scenery you have ever laid eyes on.

Lake Baikal During the cold, winter months, Lake Baikal freezes over. In fact, the frozen ice is so thick that for a short time, the Trans-Siberian Railway would run on its surface. When frozen, the lake provides a place for locals and tourists alike to sled and skate. Then in the warmer months of summer, the water is a magnificent blue that is so transparent, you can easily see to 164 feet down. On the shoreline, you will find vibrantly colored wildflowers along with forest where people can hike. Other features of Lake Baikal are the waterfalls, streams, and the abundance of flora and fauna.

Some of the more common water life includes the lake’s freshwater seal, omul salmon, which is found nowhere else in the world, along with land animals such as sables, lynx, bear, and elk. Because of the new Russian government’s work on environmental policies, the once threatened area is now protected. Therefore, you can enjoy the beautiful beaches, bird watching, boating, or simply walking through the beautiful forest areas.

While there are so many wonderful things to see and do in Russia, to include some incredible outdoor areas, there is none to surpass Lake Baikal. You can spend a day or weeks in the area, enjoying pure, unspoiled nature. The great thing about this particular area of the country is that whether visiting during the winter months when the lake is frozen solid, or in the sunny, summer months, the experience is one of a lifetime, something you will never be sorry for taking the time to see.
