Gunung Mulu National Park

Gunung Mulu National Park is the largest national park in Sarawak. If you love exploration and adventure, this particular park has it all. For one, it has the most extensive cave system in the world, along with trails through the jungle, rock climbing, mountain biking, river rapids, kayaking, and some of the most interesting people you will have the pleasure of meeting, people from the Nomadic tribe.

Interestingly, while you can get right into the heart of nature in Gunung Mulu National Park, you will also have the opportunity to stay in luxury hotel accommodations with all the amenities of home or if you prefer, you can actually stay in a jungle hut. History tells us that the majority of the park remained untapped until the late 1970s when Britain’s Royal Geographic Society came to survey it.

Gunung Mulu National Park also has three mountain ranges that span out over 388 miles, which include Gunung Mulu, Gunung Benarat, and then Gunung Api. Of the three, the only one yet to be climbed is Gunung Benarat. These mountain ranges are unique, as mentioned, honeycombing the most extensive cave system on the planet. To date, just 193 miles have been surveyed.

To give you an idea of just how impressive this cave system is, consider the size of the Sarawak Chamber. This one chamber alone is so large that you could fit 47 jumbo jets inside and still have room. The next largest chamber is called the Deer Cave, which is the longest of the caves, and then Clearwater Cave that stretches out 67 miles. Because of its vast distance, no one has ever made it from one end to the other end.

When visiting Gunung Mulu National Park, the caves are open daily to visitors but keep in mind that the majority of these caves are only accessible with proper equipment and professional guide. However, four show caves are accessible, which are beautiful. One of the most exciting experiences is visiting Deer Cave at sunset. At that time, more than three million bats pour out of the cave, making their way to the outside world where they will forage for a tasty dinner of insects.

Gunung Mulu National Park also features 15 different types of forests. Because of this, there are literally thousands of species of moss, fungi, fern, and gorgeous, flowering plants. In addition, you will discover over 170 orchids, 10 species of carnivorous pitcher plants, and an abundance of wildlife. If you love to hike, you will find many great trails, the most challenging being the Gunung Api pinnacles. The limestone is sharp and the trail steep. If you prefer something a little tamer, you can check out Headhunter’s Trail, which is flat and enjoyable. Without doubt, Gunung Mulu National Park is a spectacular experience, one you do not want to overlook.
