Romantic Road

Germany is an exciting country that is a unique mix of old and new. One aspect of Germany that many people find intriguing and somewhat mysterious is the medieval aspect. To see and understand this for yourself, you can take a beautiful drive down Romantic Road. Running 220 miles that takes you from Munich to Frankfurt, you will discover well-preserved walled towns that date back some 1,000 years or more.

The route of Romantic Road passes by a number of quaint towns that have all joined efforts in marketing the local attractions. This provides them with a means of making some money while also keeping travelers of Germany informed of the area and the country as a whole. If you prefer, you can take guided bus rides or even stop by any train station where bicycles can be rented. To ensure you stay on the right route, the tourist offices offer tons of great information and Romantic Road maps.

Romantic Road Germany While there are many charming towns along this route, some that are well worth visiting include Rothenburg, which is nestled in the Tauber River Valley, along with Nordingen and Dinkelbuhl. During the Middle Ages, Romantic Road as it is now called was a trade route, which retains its medieval character. In addition to the towns and beautiful views, the road winds its way through many amazing areas of German’s countryside. In fact, you will even enter several towns through arched gateways that are complete with guard towers.

Other attractions along the way include Gothic cathedrals, timbered Fachwerk houses, magical castles, and the Alps, and if you go during the right time of the year, you will likely run into any number of medieval festivals. Some people will travel along Romantic Road only as a day trip but if possible, we strongly recommend you stay at least one night in Rothenburg, which is truly the best-preserved medieval town in all of Germany.

Although the town of Rothenburg is sparsely populated, it still offers a wonderful variety of historical sites. For instance, a number of ancient palaces, Baroque gardens, and other places providing you with a special glimpse into this country are found along the way. Then as you travel further along the Romantic Road, you will come to the famous Neuschanhewstein Palace, along with a very, popular musical theater.

The countryside along Romantic Road is breathtaking. You can stop along the journey to enjoy a walk in the farm fields, mountains, or forests where you will feel a gentle breeze and hear the sound of birds singing. Romantic Road is just one of the magical experiences you can enjoy while visiting Germany and well worth the drive.
