Outdoor Activities in Czech Republic

As you will discover in this article, the Czech Republic is an amazing country that offers year-round outdoor activities. While many people visit this country for the culture and historical factors, there are other reasons to visit the Czech Republic – outdoor activities. With beautiful weather, incredible countryside, and warm-hearted people, taking time to enjoy the many opportunities available is something to seriously, consider.

First, a popular activity is to take a mountain tour. With such diversity of natural landscape, the Czech Republic is an outstanding place for walking and hiking. As you make your way into the lower mountains up into remote regions, you will discover a wide network of trails, each well marked. Some of the most popular regions for mountain tourism include Sumava, Jeseniky, Jizerske hory, Beskydy, and the Krkonose Mountains.

Mountain Climbing, Czech Republic
Just as mountain tours are popular so are walking tours. Again, with such great diversity of the land, you will find conditions for walking to be ideal. The footpaths are also well marked, covering territory from the lowlands into remote areas of the country. We highly recommend you spend some time around Sumava and Krkonose. However, the most spectacular of all walking tours is the one that goes to the town of Cesky Raj, which translates to “Czech Paradise” and for good reason as seen in the photograph.

For those a little more adventurous, you might try mountain climbing. Although the Czech Republic does not offer any high mountains, there are a number of places that feature limestone, crystallic, and sandstone rocks, towers, rock walls, and so on, all offering a great place to climb. Keep in mind that the best climbing areas are in protected regions so to climb them you must be a registered mountain climber.

The Czech Republic also offers excellent fishing. In fact, to maintain the integrity of fishing in this country several special organizations have been established. To fish in the Czech Republic, you are required to obtain a permit from any of these organizations, which include the Czech and Moravian Angling Union, Army Forests, State Forests, and the Ministry of Environment. The salmon and trout are incredible and abundant. If you love to trout fish, head to the Vltava River, Otava, Lipno dam reservoir, the Kamenice, or the Strela.

Skiing, Czech Republic
If winter sports are more to your liking, then the Czech Republic offers excellent slopes for downhill skiing, bobsledding, cross-country skiing, or trekking. The country offers a number of great ski centers, each equipped with ski lifts and a number of slopes with varying levels of difficulty. For trekking, a favorite pastime of the local people, you want to head to the highest mountain ranges and plains. There, you will come upon meadows dotted with dwarf pine trees and truly spectacular views. In addition, you can always enjoy a day of snowboarding, also available at ski centers.

The majority of winter resorts in the Czech Republic are in protected landscape areas or national parks. With so many great choices, you can choose the type of facility and landscape that best suits your needs. However, Krkonose is the most visited and for good reason. In addition to the view and top equipment rental, Krkonose is also a romantic spot enjoyed by couples. As the highest Bohemian mountain, the best ski centers include Pec Pod Snezkou, Spindleruv Mlyn, Rokytnice Nad Jizerou, and Harrachov.
