Chile's Dieciocho

While visiting the country of Chile, you will be intrigued by all there is to do and see. One of the things that this country is known for are the incredible festivals. One of these that are considered among the most popular is called Dieciocho. Held during the month of September, this celebration is over the independence of the country from Spain. The Chilean people go all out for Dieciocho, with parades, festivities, music, food, drink, and more!

When in Chile during this time, you will often hear music coming from open-air buildings known as Ramadas. Inside, a dance floor has been constructed, usually under a thatch-roof or a structure made from branches in the traditional Chilean style. To keep the party going, you can also enjoy national foods and drinks sold under refreshment stands called Fondas.

The Dieciocho celebration is something embraced by all Chileans, from the northern deserts to the southern tip of the country. As you walk through the streets, you will be overwhelmed with the wonderful fragrance of barbecue, baking Empanadas, and other dishes. In addition to the dance music, you will hear patriotic music of the national anthem played and people singing.

Another important aspect of Dieciocho is the rodeos. It is common to see semi-circular arenas erected throughout the country, filled with people cheering the cowboys on as they show off their skills in riding and roping. One of the most famous rodeos during this celebration is the Tehuelche Rodeo held in the city of Megallanes.

Interestingly, while the entire country celebrates Dieciocho, each region has its own special way of doing it. Although music, dance, food, drink, and rodeos are commonplace, other activities occur. For instance, some of the cities include Antofagasta, where kite-flying competitions take place.

Then, there is Tarapaca that has theatrical productions and religious ceremonies, Coquimbo includes kite flying, and children dancing, Rancaqua is another popular city for national rodeos, Atacama features cueca competitions and rodeos, BioBio offers cooking competitions, and in Maule, there are folklore presentations and traditional Creole games.

If you want to experience true Chile and the traditions of the people, visiting in September so you can participate and watch the goings-on of Dieciocho is an excellent way to accomplish that. Just remember that this celebration occurs throughout the country so no matter where you go, you will hear shouts of “Viva Chile”, as the people honor their independence and freedom.
